Breaking News Intern
Reports To:
The Breaking News Intern will report to the News Editor for a weekly check-in and throughout the writing/editing process.
Job Overview:
As the Breaking News Intern, you will assist the Branch Out Editorial team in finding and writing about breaking news to publish on our website. You will monitor online sources of news like the AP, Twitter, and various national news outlets for breaking news as it relates to climate justice. You will aggregate the breaking news and write it in the Branch Out voice for publication on branchoutnow.org and the Branch Out substack newsletter. You will also have the opportunity to produce original reporting from your local area and conduct interviews.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Monitor daily news as it relates to climate science, environmental justice and policy, climate change in politics, carbon sequestration and permaculture.
Write summaries of the most important news events to publish on branchoutnow.org under the direction of the editorial team.
Pitch original story ideas to the News Editor and work together to produce original climate journalism based on your own research and interviews.
Work with the editorial team in contributing to our weekly newsletter sent via substack.
Qualifications:
Preferably, you are a current High School or College student, or have recently graduated in the past 6 months, but we will consider non-students depending on the circumstance.
Must have previous experience or interest in journalism and topics related to climate change and environmental justice.
Strong writing skills and the ability to understand and apply feedback from the editorial team.
Excellent internet research skills and preferably an obsession with current events and breaking news.
Self-motivated and able to communicate regularly with the News Editor.
Reliable internet access is required.
Ability to commit about 10 hours per week to Branch Out.

Professional experience in Journalism and Nonprofit work
You will build a portfolio of published work with your name on it at an independent journalism outlet with more than one million hits and your work can be published in our weekly newsletter with several thousand subscribers.
Connections and mentorship with experienced professionals in the fields of Media/Journalism, Permaculture Design, Politics/Campaigns and Education.
For successful interns, you will receive a professional reference and letter of recommendation as well as the opportunity for paid employment at Branch Out, should any paid positions open up.
